Compter sur is often reflexively translated as count on or rely

We have often noted that the verb compter sur is reflexively translated as “count on” or “rely.” In many cases this translation is correct, such as here:

Entre-temps, je compte sur votre collaboration pour poursuivre votre travail de promotion du Réseau et de diffusion de l’information relative aux avancées en matière de condition féminine.
In the meantime, I am counting on you to continue your efforts to promote the Network and share information on issues related to the advancement of women.

Le peuple haïtien compte sur la solidarité internationale pour l’aider à trouver une solution pacifique à la crise actuelle.
The Haitian people are relying on international solidarity to help them find a peaceful solution to the current crisis.

In each of these examples, the subject (“I” in the first sentence, “the Haitian people” in the second sentence) is placing hopes on something. Sometimes you can have this same meaning, but choose a different verb:

La municipalité de Beaumont compte sur le financement de Gaz Métro pour évaluer l’impact de la construction d’un port méthanier sur son territoire.
The municipality of Beaumont is looking to Gaz Métro for funding to evaluate the impact that construction of an LNG terminal would have in the area.

À titre de président du conseil d’administration de la Fondation, je compte sur votre présence, car je serais particulièrement heureux de vous remercier personnellement de votre action philanthropique.
As chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, I am looking forward to seeing you there and personally thanking you for your generosity.

L’Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) pourra compter sur un budget supplémentaire de 225 000 $ par année pour différentes initiatives en santé des autochtones auxquelles le gouvernement s’est engagé lors du Forum socio-économique des Premières Nations à l’automne 2006.
Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) can expect $225,000 in additional funding per year for various Native health initiatives as per the government’s commitment at the 2006 First Nations Socioeconomic Forum held last fall.

But compter sur may have nothing to do with placing hopes on something

Often, however, compter sur has nothing to do with “placing hopes on” something, and translating it as “count on” or “rely” creates slippage in meaning or an outright error. Consider these examples:

Empire compte sur une équipe de 3 000 employés qualifiés, bien formés et totalement dignes de confiance.
Établie sur la côte nord du fleuve Saint-Laurent, Baie-Comeau compte sur ses 25 000 citoyennes et citoyens pour bien vous recevoir.

In the first sentence, Empire is not placing its hopes on 3,000 qualified employees, but actually claiming to have 3,000 qualified employees. This gives the following translation: Empire boasts a team of 3,000 qualified, well-trained, highly trustworthy employees.

In the second sentence, the City of Baie-Comeau is not closing its eyes and wishing on a star that the city’s residents will be welcoming, but actually stating that they are. This suggests the following translation: Located on the St. Lawrence River’s north shore, Baie-Comeau is home to 25,000 welcoming residents.

Other examples exist for this type of usage:

Le Ministère compte sur plusieurs partenaires gouvernementaux et non gouvernementaux pour mener à bien sa mission.
The Ministry draws on the support of a number of government and non-government partners to ensure the success of its mission.

C’est pourquoi notre service après-vente compte sur un personnel hautement qualifié, capable de vous apporter tout le soutien technique nécessaire.
That’s why our Customer Service Department is made up of highly qualified personnel, capable of giving you all the technical support you need.

Notre cabinet compte sur une équipe hautement professionnelle en expertise comptable, en fiscalité, en finance et en gestion-conseil.
Our firm is backed by a highly professional team specialized in accounting, taxation, financing, and management consulting.

La mise en œuvre de la Convention doit pouvoir compter sur un mécanisme de règlement des différends efficace.
In the same vein, implementation of the convention must be accompanied by establishment of an effective dispute settlement mechanism.

The most effective strategy may be to simply use the verb to have

Au chapitre de la sécurité, le Xterra compte sur deux coussins gonflables à l’avant, quatre appuis-tête, de bons phares, une très bonne visibilité, deux grands miroirs extérieurs.
In terms of safety, the Xterra has two front airbags, four headrests, strong headlights, very good visibility, and two large side mirrors.

Enfin, le Québec compte sur un secteur de l’après-vente fort dynamique composé de joueurs qui travaillent activement à diversifier leurs produits.
Québec also has a thriving after-sales sector, with players actively working to diversify their products.

Cette troisième compagnie invitée de calibre international, qui compte sur une équipe de près de 80 danseurs, jouit d’une solide réputation.
Our third international guest company of the season has an enviable reputation and a total of nearly 80 dancers.

Notre entreprise compte sur plus de 20 années d’expérience dans le domaine de l’impression d’étiquettes autocollantes.
We have over 20 years’ experience in adhesive label printing.

Or approach the sentence from a different angle

Another strategy is to approach the sentence from a different angle and state the same thing in a different way, often using the verb “to be.” Consider these examples:

En ce sens, le MCC compte sur la collaboration de tous.
Everyone’s cooperation is very important.

Elle compte sur plusieurs employés chevronnés pour la fabrication de ses produits de haute qualité.
Our seasoned employees are the secret to our manufacturing success.

Here is another example using a different verb:

Il est demeuré à l’affût des développements technologiques et scientifiques du domaine de la santé et compte sur de nombreux équipements récents.
It is constantly on the lookout for scientific and technological developments in the field of health and has recently acquired many new pieces of equipment.

Sometimes you don’t need a verb at all

Citons ici l’exemple d’Haïti qui compte sur une force de paix composée de la quasi-totalité des pays des Amériques en vue de consolider un processus de paix qui redonnerait à ce pays une démocratie solide.
Consider the example of Haiti, where a peace force representing virtually all the countries of the Americas is protecting a peace process that will restore the country to viable democracy.

Remember to think of these possibilities the next time you have to translate compter sur.
